Swede Life: Tips for Settling in Sweden, Lagom part 2

In my previous blog post I shared my take on Lagom culture in Sweden. Read it here.

Shortly, I explained how moderation culture or Lagom is a requirement in Swedish society and how I dealt with it.

The primary reason behind this cultural phenomenon lies in Sweden's emphasis on maintaining a healthy work-life or study-life balance. With most individuals adhering to a 9-to-5 work schedule—neither clocking in a minute early nor staying a minute late—they can effectively manage their routines and allocate time to other aspects of life.

Another contributing factor is the unwritten principle known as "Jantelagen" or "Jante Law," akin to the "Tall Poppy Syndrome," which discourages standing out or boasting about achievements. While this may stem from a desire for equality or a fear of elitism, it can negatively impact individuals' well-being, personal growth, and societal advancement.

The impact on individuals who resist this culture can vary, influenced by factors like their resilience, the culture of their social or professional circles, and their ability to set boundaries and find supportive communities.

From a positive point of view, the tall poppy flower symbolizes ambition, excellence, and the willingness to reach greater heights. It encourages individuals to strive for success and to pursue their goals with determination and inspire others to recognize and celebrate the achievements of those who have risen above the norm.

Like many immigrants in Sweden, I found it tough to connect with people at first. I tried to act more like a Swede to fit in.  As a result, my confidence fell restricting my career and personal advancement and lowering my motivation. But eventually, I realized it didn't feel true to me. My values are different.

I'm inspired by individuals who challenge norms and carve out their unique paths for growth, without concern for standing out from the crowd. I've come to realize that it's best to create my own network and follow those who resonate with me to naturally gravitate together.
